*DVD Classic* Inside The Actor's Studio: Dave Chappelle
James LiptonSHOUT Factory

Dave Chappelle on Inside The Actor's Studio with James Lipton. It just doesn't sound right...but the result is the best and most honest Dave Chappelle interview ever.
As Chappelle ran late, the audience watched Chappelle's Show waiting for the comedian to arrive. And when he did, host James Lipton dives head first into the life and career of Chappelle. It's compelling to hear the story of Dave getting his start in comedy clubs at the age of 14 and how, in Chappelle like fashion, he was killin' them from the start.
When Lipton delves into Chappelle's leaving his Comedy Central show and going to Africa, it's evident that Dave is somewhat apprehensive or guarded when talking about it (the Inside The Actor's Studio interview was conducted shortly after Dave's return from Africa). As Dave breaks down why he left, you begin to understand the trappings of celebrity and why a $50 million dollar contract may be welfare for the rich. In other words, it's the extreme opposite end of struggling but still retains some of the worst elements (not knowing where to turn, pressure, people on your back, etc.)
As with any Chappelle appearance, the humor flows rapidly. When Dave tells the story of getting into a fight with a kid in kindergarten because the kid was coloring corn green, he sets the tone for the interview to be hilarious and honest.
James Lipton's ability to put his guests at ease provides a platform for his guests to open up and share stories and information they may not make available in another venue. If you're a fan of Dave Chappelle, this DVD is a must own and should sit right alongside Chappelle's Show in your DVD collection.
