"Sydewayz" takes you inside Bay Area car culture like no DVD before. Viewers are given front row seats to the "sideshow" and of course there is plenty of "ghost-riding" and "gas, brake, dip".
The "Sideshow" is one of the biggest things goin' down when the sun goes down (and sometimes when it's up) in the Bay Area. It features hundreds of people gathering in parking lots to watch old school rides and some new schools swang their cars in figure 8 motions creating an atomic bomb like amount of smoke from rubber burning on the pavement as the cars swang dangerously close to spectators. In several scenes on the DVD, we see the dangers of the sideshow as cars hit onlookers. No one is seriously injured in the scenes but it illustrates the length some people go to for their love of swangin' and Hyphy.
While the DVD sticks close to the sideshow, we get a glimpse at the other elements of Hyphy culture that go along with it. This is includes the infamous "ghost-riding" of the whip (car), a city bus doin' the "gas, brake, dip" and of course the music which is a huge element that charges this burgeoning, cult like scene.
It would have been nice to see the DVD delve deeper into the history of Hyphy and Bay Area culture, but this one's really all about the rides. The scenes of cars burning out their tires do grow tiresome after awhile but there is enough variety to make this a solid release (including some humorous crash footage and crazy video of people going Hyphy in the middle of an intersection while it's a full on green light).
"Sydewayz" is a glimpse into Bay Area culture. And unless you're a Bay Area resident, you'll watch this DVD and love every minute of it...but will feel left out the whole time...that is until the whole world gets Hyphy.
