Kidz In The HallDuck Down/Major League

Is indie major now? That's the question people might be asking after Kidz In The Hall, the duo made up of Naledge and Double O, charted on MTV's TRL with their track "Drivin' Down The Block." Their Duck Down debut "The In Crowd" is a feature heavy trip through the various worlds of Hip-Hop music.
"Black Out" starts the album strong sounding as if it fell off Public Enemy's truck complete with frantic scratches and a Bomb Squad'ish backdrop. "Paper Trail" is next up and is a great canvas to showcase Naledge's easy, skillful flow on the mic while Double O provides a true head nod track that is made for the summer air.
"The In Crowd" is packed with guest appearances, likely a testament to the skill of Naledge and Double O. Some of the best moments on the record where guests truly make a difference include the sure fire banger "Drivin' Down The Block" (Remix) feat. Bun B, Pusha T and The Cool Kids (even though the original has done fine on its own), "Snob Hop" (where not surprisingly the combo of Kidz In The Hall and Camp Lo provide pure swagger OD) and a great appearance by Estelle on "Love Hangover."
With all of the braggadocio flows artfully spit on this album, it's easy to miss the true gem of this album; Double O's production. The beats are near perfect and are filled with horns, classic drum kicks and a sound that is situated perfectly between orchestra like and vintage Hip-Hop. And while Naledge may have some quotables on the album, not surprisingly a gem from Sean Price on "The Pledge" stands out:
"Ike Turner died I cried/smacked my girl in her sleep/she woke up swollen holdin' blood on her cheek"
Additional standouts include the should-be-single "Let Your Hair Down", "Middle Of The Map Pt.2" and "The In Crowd." The lone real misstep on the album is the terrible "Lucifers Joyride" featuring Travis McCoy of Gym Class Heroes.
Although it would be nice to hear more of what Kidz In The Hall can do on their own without so many guest features, "The In Crowd" is one of the best Hip-Hop albums to be released in the past several months.
