Getting Educated on G.E.D. Boss: TYGA

www.myspace.com/tyga
Tyga, Lil' Wayne's newest signee, and Young Money's next up to bat, is set to introduce himself to the masses on June 10th, with his debut CD, "No Introduction." Most people were probably introduced to Tyga during the Fallout Boy and Lil' Wayne mash-up performance that occurred during the 2007 MTV Music Awards. Now signed under two labels, the first being Decaydance Records, owned by his cousin Travis McCoy of Gym Class Heroes, and the second being Lil' Wayne's Young Money imprint, Tyga is set to make a big impact in '08. Tyga comes with a unique, fresh style on his debut CD, and isn't afraid to be different. Tyga's debut single, "Coconut Juice", is creating a buzz around the industry as the video has just been added to MTV and BET. Only time will tell if 2008 will be considered the year of the "Tyga".

Harrison Carter: Hey what going on Tyga, how you doing brother?
Tyga: Good man.
HC: I see you've got an album coming out June 10th called, No Introduction, are you excited about that?
Tyga: Yea, very excited. It's my introduction to the game, I mean, we gonna see what it does, but its gonna be big.
HC: Definitely. What can we expect from this album artistically and creatively?
Tyga: Expect something different, not just your average hip-hop or rap. I'm just talking about real stuff that I want to do. The expression is different. I mean I got a song on there called, "Mexican Bar", I got crazy songs on there. The concepts on there are real good, as people can tell off hearing "Coconut Juice" you know what I mean, that they can expect something crazy.
HC: Yea, "Coconut Juice" is a real interesting single. As an artist being signed to Decaydance Records and Young Money, you are associating yourself with the likes of a few musical powerhouses. Pete Wentz of Fallout Boy, your cousin Travis McCoy of Gym Class Heroes, and hip-hop heavyweight Lil' Wayne represent many different styles and genres in music, is that why you chose "Coconut Juice" as your first single? To try to appeal to a broader audience than just hip-hop?
Tyga: Yea definitely, I mean I could have just put out a nice hip-hop tempo record, or I could have put out a nice lil' slow song for the girls, but I was thinking big. You know what I mean, this is my time to shine right here. I gotta do something for everybody, know what I mean. Like certain people are always going to like me, know what I mean. The Lil' Wayne crowd gonna like me 'cuz I'm on their side doing stuff. If I'm out on the Fall Out Boy's crowd is gonna like me 'cuz I'm out on their side doing stuff. So, I Just wanted to do something for everybody, you know.
HC: Right, I feel you man. So, how did the whole Decaydance/Young Money venture come to life in the first place?
Tyga: Well my cousin, Travis, he got me under Decaydance actually. I opened up for Fallout Boy and did a couple shows with them, and he said I want to sign you and I said let's do it, feel me? They brought me on tour. I recorded some tings for my album on tour with them. Patrick Stump did a couple beats, so that came out real good. And umm, Lil' Wayne, we met at the VMA's, when we performed with Fall Out Boy. We exchanged info, and then I ended up hittin' him up and said I wanted to get down with Young Money, and he flew me out to Atlanta. We was in the studio like all day just recording stuff, and we actually ended up recording some stuff that's going to end up on the Carter 3. We recorded a track with a lot of young artists, and then he was like 'I want you to be with Young Money', and ever since then we been linking up, doing songs.
HC: That's what's up man. Everyone is going to be looking forward that I'm sure. But, can you tell us anything special about this Carter 3 collabo with Weezy, or is that classified information?
Tyga: Umm, I can say it's gonna be dope. It's called, "A Millie". He put "A Millie" the street version now, with just him on it.
HC: Yea, he's got a couple of versions out. I believe he's got a version with him and Cory Gunz.
Tyga: Yea, that wasn't suppose to come out. That got leaked, I don't know who leaked it, but that got leaked. On the album version, it's gonna be me, Cory Gunz, another Young Money artist, just a bunch of young artist that spit basically on that beat. I think it's going to be used as interludes throughout his album. I don't know how he's gonna do it, but that's all I know for right now.
HC: That sounds crazy man, but going back to your album, are there any favorite tracks or collaborations on there that you think stick out?
Tyga: Oh yea definitely. I've got a track on there called, "I Am." It's basically comparisons to what I am to this and what I am to this, and what this is to this. It's crazy, and it's featuring Lil' Wayne too, so it's a very lyrical song. I've got another track on there featuring Patrick Stump, its called "Build Me Credit Now." It's crazy. You know I got a couple joints featuring Travis. I got a lot of tracks on there where you're going to be like, Damn! I got this one track on there actually, that's called, "Diamond Life." It's featuring this girl named, Patti Crash. It's dope, matter fact it's gonna be on Madden '09, it's definitely a good look.
HC: Well it looks like you;ve got a pretty well-rounded album man. Besides your album, you seem to be a very busy man with a lot else on your plate. You're a boss yourself with your GED movement, with Getting Every Dollar, Grinding Every Day, Getting Educated Daily. Can you expand on that? What's going on with your artists Gata and Arch?
Tyga: Oh yea definitely. We going to get all that going, know what I mean. Everbody knows that I'm opening the door right now, feel me? GED has been around since I was 13, and I'm 18 now so it's been going for about 5 years now. People know I got it tatted above my eye brow, you know it stands for Getting Every Dollar, Getting Educated Daily, Grinding Every Day. We actually workin' on a GED mix tape right now. Arch's from Houston. We got another artists named, Q, from LA. He represents more of the street and that gangsta rap. Once people know who I am, than everyone is gonna know who GED is, feel me?
HC: Right, I think it's going to be a strong movement man. It's got a strong message and you've got a flawless marketing strategy. Now back to you as an artist. It seems as if you have a pretty intense work ethic, and I know one of your bosses, Lil' Wayne, has a pretty demanding work ethic as well. Has his work ethic rubbed off on you in any way and are you influenced by him at all?
Tyga: Most definitely. I mean, it's a lot of motivation. I mean when I'm working with him I feel comfortable. When I'm working with him, it's like this is what rap artists are supposed to be. I mean we suppose to be in here all day, until 7 in the morning recording songs, you know what I mean? That's where it started, and a lot of artists don't do that no more. It's definitely a good feeling when working with him; I just feel a lot of freedom. It's not just like we go in the studio for an hour or two, it's like 'you want to go on this, cool, do it, go for it.' I mean I'm big on recording. I got the mix tape out right now, "No Introduction" the mix tape. It's on the Myspace page right now. I'm about to drop another one May 10th, and then my album drops June 10th.
HC: Well you're definitely giving your fans enough material to last them until your official June 10th debut, and I'm sure they appreciate that.
Tyga: Yea, definitely.
HC: You're style is crazy and all over the place, which is why I think a lot of your fans appreciate your music. You've been quoted in a Sixshot.com interview saying, " I just go wherever the music takes me. However the music speaks to me, is how I come on the track." That sounds very similar to Weezy as well. Is that why you guys connected? Because I feel as artists, your creativity levels are above everybody else. You just go on a track and flow how you want to flow. Is that something that you think you and Wayne share?
Tyga: Yea definitely. He actually told me, a lot of artists depend on their flow. And that's one thing about me, I just rap, and that's real. I don't know how to describe how I rap or make songs period. I don't depend on my flow. I express myself through the beats, know what I mean? And that's what he does too, so we connect through that. I mean, I've known Wayne for only a year, and it's amazing how we connect so well.
HC: DO you do any production yourself? Who do you have producing the tracks on your album?
Tyga: I've got this cat out of Philly named, named Stress. He's a well-known dude in philly, hip-hop cat; he did a couple joints. Patrick Stump, he did a couple joints. I got this dude named, Sam, in-house dude that did some beats and added a well rounded sound to some tracks on there, to make sure everyone liked them. I mean it's a good record man, I'm gonna be real excited when it comes out.
HC: Well, your "Coconut Juice" single and video are both blowing up and creating a big buzz around the Country. You have an all-star line-up of celebrities making cameos in the video, the concept is crazy. It's obviously going to be a big summer joint. But do you have second single lined up already?
Tyga: Well depending on how this goes, I actually already know how this one goes, it's gonna be big. I mighthit em with a girl song, because I got song bigger than Coconut Juice, and people gonna be like, wow! With Coconut Juice, they're gonna be like, 'Oh that's cool, he did that song, that's who he is. But we got singles to choose from man. We got three right now we're thinking of like "Teenage Love", "Diamond Life", or "?". We've got some other stuff though man. (Laughs)
HC: Slick Rick had a song called "Teenage Love" about 20 years ago. Is your song with the same title influenced by that track, or does it stand alone?
Tyga: It was definitely influenced by that Slick Rick Joint, I just put a little twist to it and it's dope.
HC: That sounds hot man, lookin' forward to that. Do you have anything else to say to your fans out there before we go?
Tyga: Check the video out. Vote for my single "Coconut Juice" on your radio stations and vote for the video on MTV and BET. You can catch me on tour right now promoting my music. Check me out on Myspace. That's about it man. Album, "No Introduction", coming out June 10th.
