2nd Round K.O..: Urban Mystic

A dynamic young man from Florida with an unusual stage name and powerful, cutting edge vocals caught the attention of several knowledgeable fans and the music world in 2004 and 2005, with his debut CD, the SoBe Entertainment/Warner Brothers Records release, Ghetto Revelations. This energetic 20 yr old writer, musician, arranger, producer, rapper and singer is truly Mr. Versatility.
HHNLive: Welcome back!! For starters, this new album seems like an extension of that of your debut, you even opted to title the record, Ghetto Revelations: II -- How do you feel that this project either differs and/or compares to that of your first release??
Urban Mystic: Yes, the title is the same, but the style is different. We are gearing this album to (a) younger audience. That is why I added a Hip Hop blend into this album. Also, the album is different because we revamped the label -- New people with better ideas.
HHNLive: On this second go around, you have enlisted the help of such top notch A-Listers as Scott Storch, Cool & Dre, Mike City and, of course, Kay Gee -- How were you able to assemble such a stellar team of producers?? And, sonically speaking, how much input do you actually have when it comes to working with people like Scott, Mike, Kay, etc., in the lab??
UM: It felt good to work with such legends in the game. They allowed me to be me. I also felt that I had to do my best. They were open to any idea that I brought to the table.
HHNLive: I noticed that you even included your debut single, "Where Were You," on this CD, too -- Why did you decide to do that?? Was it mainly because you were you not entirely happy with the commercial success of Ghetto Revelations??
UM: That particular song was my biggest hit off the first album. That is the song that the public remembers at the shows. It's funny, there would be times that I would sing, "Where Were You," and you can hear people say, "Oh that's the guy that did that song."
HHNLive: Tell me about choosing Ghetto Revelations as the title of both albums -- What does this name represent to, and for, you??
UM: The title represents my life -- I was born in the hood, but raised in the church.
HHNLive: When did music first come into your life??
UM: I started to sing in the church chorus at the age of 5. At the age of 13, I heard my voice recorded for the first time, and from that point on I took it very serious. When I was 17, I went to the club to perform at an open mic. I did not know that the owner of the club was in the audience that night. He approached me to let me know that he also owns a label called SOBE. Since I was 17 at the time, he told me if I was serious to see him again once I was of age. Man, as soon as I turned 18, I was knocking at his door and the rest is history in the making.
HHNLive: You are from Fort Lauderdale, Florida, right?? Artistically, who inspired you??
UM: Yes, I am. My musical influences are Bobby Womack, Al Green, Jodeci, Gerald Levert, Jodeci, The O'Jays...I could go on.
HHNLive: Urban Mystic, that's a unique name -- How did it come about??
UM: Cecile Barker created the name for me. The name Urban Mystic has a similar concept as the album title Ghetto Revelations -- Urban means the streets and Mystic is the higher being above.
HHNLive: In a nutshell, how would you define your style of music??
UM: It's a triple threat -- It's Gospel meets Hip-Hop and R&B.
HHNLive: What has been your recipe for success in the recording industry??
UM: The key to my success is the 'Word' [Bible]. I grew up on it, and will continue to follow it. You cannot go wrong with it -- The 'Word' keeps me grounded.
HHNLive: Anything else that you have further aspirations to become involved with??
UM: Basically, I have no limits. It would be whatever I am able to do. I could do movies, create my own clothing or jewelry line, or any opportunity that I see fit coming my way.
HHNLive: Are you happy with the current state of R&B music of today??
UM: It's cool, because I am playing a part of bringing real music back. People I feel that are bringing real music back are Fantasia, Usher, Jamie Foxx, and Angie Stone.
HHNLive: Who exactly is Urban Mystic??
UM: I am a real person. I make mistakes, and (I'm) down to earth. I do not like anyone to hold anything against me.
HHNLive: What do you enjoy doing in your off-time??
UM: Spending time with my family. I do not see them often, so any little break I get, I spend with them.
HHNLive: What has been your biggest accomplishment up until this point in your career??
UM: Appearing, and performing on the Soul Train music awards.
HHNLive: What does your future hold??
UM: Producing, and writing for other artists. I would not mind appearing in a few movies (either).
HHNLive: Album, Ghetto Revelations II, is in stores now, correct?? What's next for Urban Mystic??
UM: Check my My Space account at http://www.myspace.com/urbanmystic for tour dates. While you are there, hit me up -- I am always checking the site.
HHNLive: Any message you wanna relay to our readers??
UM: Thank you to my fans for all your support and I look forward to sharing my next album with you. Log-on to My Space, and drop me a line -- I will holla back.
