Other Side Of The Block: Back Like Jordan Wearin' The 45

I can’t believe it’s been over a month since I last dropped a post on HHNLive.com but I’m back like MJ rocking #45, kinda rusky but I’ll get back to form. The HHNLiveEIC would have probably given away my spot by now but it’s not like Rebel, Chaundon and DJ Mars have been worth a damn during my absence. Between being pressed to pump out issues of your favorite rapper’s favorite magazine (Ozone for you slow nuccas), moving into a new crib in the A and getting news that my grandmother had a stroke and suffered brain damage, I really haven’t felt like writing shit. I woke up a few mornings over the past month feeling like Saigon, ready to throw up my middle finger and chunk the deuces to the game. But I love writing and music too much to walk away from hip-hop journalism. So I’m back on HHNLive.com like Chingy’s back with DTP (wait, that’s not a good comparison). I’m back at it like Free, Beans and the Roc-A-Fella Dynasty (yeah, that’s better).
Since I missed out on some opportunities to chime in on some important topics over the last few weeks, I decided to list some of the things I would have written about had I dropped something on the Other Side of the Block over the last month.
Jadakiss signs with Def Jam – Jadakiss is one of my Top 10 favorite rappers of all-time (wait, I think he is), so I’m hoping the dude gets a major push now that he signed with Def Jam. But honestly, Kiss would have been better off signing with Koch. We all saw what happened to Redman, Method Man, the Roots and Ghostface under the Carter administration. But not you LL, your album flopped because it sucked.
Irv Gotti Show – Gotti’s Way on VH1 is my favorite new television show. It’s way better than watching those clowns on I Love New York 2. Irv’s relationship with his ex-wife is what really makes the show what it is. I’m not really sure why Gotti keeps doing old girl dirty. I’d gladly wife his chick, while telling his boys to “man up” for him. And this show has given me my new favorite quote to explain why I cheated on my ex-girlfriends. “She’s special, but not special enough for me to stop fucking.” Yeah, this show will hold me until the next season of the Wire.
Why Is Snoop Dogg Singing Like T-Pain? – I kinda fucks with Snoop Dogg’s new single “Sexual Eruption” but I’ve been trying to figure out why Snoop had to go the voice enhancer route a la T-Pain on the track. Remember when all those Lil Wayne songs leaked and they all sound like Weezy stole Pain’s voice machine. I just hope this doesn’t start a new trend of rappers thinking they can be ternt sangas by using the T-Pain method. The last thing we need is for a bunch of wack rappers sounding like wack R&B singers.
American Music Awards – I was watching the American Music Awards last week. I’m not really sure why, but I think I just wanted to see Beyonce, Alicia Keys and Rihanna’s performances. But during the process I started thinking, this is a dumbass awards show. Justin Timberlake kept winning awards but he didn’t even bother showing up. Daughtry and Beyonce won most of the other awards and I’m still trying to figure out how Bone Thugs N Harmony won best rap group. But then again, with all the half talents rappers thinking they can do it dolo, there aren’t very many groups anymore.
Free At Last – Freeway’s album is pretty damn good. I’m sure the album will go double plastic but at least the dude released one of the best albums of the year. But they should have shot a video for “Roc-A-Fella Billionaries” instead of all those other bullshit videos that get no BET burn. But I’m sure Jay-Z was too busy marketing his own album or somewhere with his face in between Beyonce’s legs.
Lauren London – I usually dedicate at least one post a month to New-New on my own site because I’m that dangerously in love with her, so I just wanted to throw her in here. That Christmas movie she’s in came out last week and while I haven’t seen it yet, I heard she was looking like bathroom material, so I’m definitely gonna check the flick this week. Shawty is a ten and hands down my favorite to take “Hottest Chick In The Game” in 2008.
Saigon Retires? – I really haven’t followed the Saigon retirement story close enough to know if the dude really retired or whatever but I feel him on the fact that the game is full of shit. Fuck it, just leak the damn album like Phonte did that Little Brother joint and be done with it. No matter what, the album’s gonna be critical acclaimed but no one’s gonna buy it. Shit, Tay knew the business. I think Saigon would do the same. But that Moral of the Story mixtape will hold me until Sai’s camp figures something out.
Jay-Z’s American Gangster – To be completely honest, I still haven’t listened to American Gangster all that much. People have said its Jay’s best work since Reasonable Doubt but I’ve found that the album is good, damn better than Kingdumb Come but not better than Blueprint, and I just haven’t felt like listening to Jigga rap about drug dealing again. That’s probably because I haven’t seen the film yet. But I’m taking my shawty to the movies to see AG this week, and with Christmas around the corner she better not ask for any popcorn.
No Khaled…Alicia Keys Is The Best – Honestly, I haven’t played the Jigga album because I’ve been bumping Alicia Keys’ album. Sometimes you gotta take a step back from hip-hop and listen to some other genres of music, whether it’s R&B, rock, jazz or whatever, to relax your mind. Between Soulja Boy and Khaled screaming “we the best” every time I turned on the radio, I about lost it.
Kanye West’s Mother Passes Away – Actually, I wouldn’t have written anything about the passing of Dr. Donda West. But I wanted to give my condolences to Kanye West and his family.
