Pitbull's Gone Krazy!

Mr. M.I.A. himself, Pitbull has finally parted ways with his label and is ready to turn up the heat, heading into the new year as a free agent. With a new Lil Jon assisted single called, "Krazy," Pitbull is going to have all the clubs of the world going nuts soon. With a hot new single and video out, Pitbull is bound to catch the attention of the major labels...but will he sign or remain independent?
HHN Live.com journalist, Tanya M. Fowlow, recently spoke with Pitbull to discuss his legal battles of this past year along with his plans for the future. Take a read as Pitbull dives in topics such as his album, TV reality series, his new label, and politics!
Tanya M. Fowlow: Ok, I debated for a while on which question to open the interview with and I decided to go with what I’m going to ask you so I can just get it out of the way and then take some time to focus on what you’ve got going on currently. So, without further delay let me just ask you man: Can you touch on what went down at your former label? I guess just speak on that whole situation for a moment.
Pitbull: As far as what went down at TVT is real simple. They we’re doin’...[pause]...well not they because they had such a great staff of people that were behind the scenes but it happened to be the President of the company who called the shots....[pause]...he just happened to be unprofessional, we’ll use that word. They got into a lawsuit with Slip N’ Slide Records and Slip N’ Slide Records took em’ all the way into bankruptcy court, and that’s basically where we stepped in and we fought them – that would be me and Lil’ Jon. We fought em’ at bankruptcy court. Now, Lil’ Jon is signed to Universal Republic and me, I’m still a free agent.
TMF: Alright. So you mentioned that you’re a free agent but I’ve been reading about a label called Mr. 305.
P: Well Mr. 305 Inc. is my label. As far as business things that I’m doin’ right now, I’m with the Orchard Group and that is just a single deal for the record “Krazy” with Lil’ Jon... and the video just premiered on Yahoo.
TMF: So you mentioned “Krazy,” and Lil Jon; as you said you and him were labelmates before the drama so I assume that you guys are still cool.
P: Oh of course! Jon is like ahhh...I call him my Cuban cousin! [Laughing]
TMF: Let’s talk about “Krazy.” Why’d you decide to have Lil’ Jon over another rapper on that track with you?
P: The reason that me and Jon always do records together is a survival tactic being from the label that we were at and they wouldn’t let us do records with no other artists. It was always like, “Look dog, I got a big record and I’m gunna make sure I get you on it that way you stay relevant in the market and you keep momentum as far as your career.” With the “Anthem” and “Krazy” that’s basically what I did with Jon since he didn’t drop and album off. It’s basically one hand washes the other and we both wash our face sort of connection.
TMF: Where’d you get the concept for “Krazy?” What inspired the track so to speak?
P: Well a DJ friend of mine, Big Fyfe in L.A., he took me down with a record ...the beat was called “Cream” from a cat that produces named, Frederico Pranchez. When I heard the beat “Cream”, which is the [Singing]....”duh duh duh da dun da...”, I said, “Wow, I just wanna put some vocals on this! This would be crazy!” [Laughing] and that’s basically how we came up with the concept for that record. To me it’s very energetic, it has great vibes, and it’s good music!
TMF: So you’ve got this hot single; it’s catchy, clubs are spinning it, and it has put you back on the charts. How do you personally feel about the response so far? Is this what you expected, is it more or is it less?
P: It’s exactly what I expected to be honest with you. The record is gaining a lot of momentum fast – it’s top 10 Rhythmic, right now its number 1 at iTunes...the record’s been movin’ fast without a video. So now that the record has visuals I feel it’s only gunna take it to the next level! It’s already big internationally: It’s big in France, it’s big in London...Australia. The record is makin’ a major wave to be honest with you.
TMF: As you mentioned, hot off the press is your video for “Krazy.” I hear there are quite a few cameos by some fellow rappers.
P: I mean those are all guys that show me love from the beginning of my career. I got Lil’ Jon, you got Fat Joe in there, you have Rick Ross in there, we got KC in there. We also got LMFAO, which is a new up and comin’ group that you guys gotta definitely lookout for.
TMF: Anything else you’d like to say about the video?
P: I mean there’s so many things goin’ on in the video. The women are beautiful. I think it’s something that’s very creative, very eye-catching, and I think it’s gunna keep people addicted to the television while it plays.
TMF: Prior to “Krazy” you had “Go Girl” with Trina and Young Boss as well as “The Anthem” also featuring Lil’ Jon as you mentioned; we now have “Krazy” and the video for that track…when are we going to see the album?
P: The album, which is gunna be called “Rebeloution,” and that will be out ahhhh....I’m lookin’ for a summer 2009 release.
TMF: Do you feel that singles that have already been release represent what fans can expect on the album?
P: I think it represents an aspect of the album. There’s gunna be a lot of creative music on this album. It’s definitely gunna be global, it’s definitely gunna be international and its gunna be high energy!
TMF: Nice! Typically in interviews I’ll ask artists who should listen to their music and why but I’m going to flip it up on you. Tell me who shouldn’t listen to your music.
P: Ummm, who shouldn’t listen to my music...those who are conservative!
TMF: Who’s helping you out on the forthcoming project?
P: As far as features I got a lot of people lined up but they’re not official yet so I won’t mention them. Producers...you’re gunna have Jim Johnson, Lil’ Jon, you’re gunna have Mr. CollegePark, and you’re gunna have a local cat from down here in Miami called Bayne.
TMF: Besides music you have a few other things going on. Tell the readers about your reality series ...[Pause]...forgive me if I don’t pronounce this correctly...“La Esquina” which is due to run its second season in later this month on Mun2.
P: Mun2 it’s called Mun Dos but that’s cool. As far as Latina you’re pretty good so don’t worry about it. [Laughing]
TMF: [Laughing] Thank you!
P: The reality show is basically talking about hot topics that are affectin’ our society...whether it be the presidential election, ...homosexuality...whatever. What we do is we get these hot topics and put it together in an episode and everybody talks about it collectively. There’s a lot of humour involved but at the end of the day it’s a message where people can take it, run with it, think about it, apply it,....and somehow we hope to teach somebody somethin’ new.
TMF: The first season was pretty successful and it was the highest rated show on Mun2 right?
P: Correct!
TMF: Are there any special plans for this season to keep the spot?
P: I mean, this season is gunna be obviously tuned up a little more. It’s been tweaked a whole lot more; but, the good thing is the network Mun2 has went from 6 million to 24 million viewers so it’s definitely gunna be more impactful.
TMF: You’re clearly a busy, busy man! We’re heading into the big vote you are also involved in Voto Latino. What’s that all about?
P: Voto Latino is basically an organization that’s been put together to get young folks to vote especially minorities. To teach them the importance of voting, the power of voting...how voting can change not a life, not a city, not a state, but a country and maybe even worldwide...you know how the United States runs the world. It’s basically educating them on the right that they have. Our parent’s comin’ to this country without papers, without becomin’ citizens they didn’t have the right to vote and therefore us born in this country we’re, Cuban-American, Mexican-American, whatever-American... and we have the right to do that. We just wanna make sure the youth is educated enough to exercise and know exactly what they’re doin’ with that power.
TMF: Other than all the stuff we’ve talked about so far, is there anything else that Pitbull is doing that you’d like to share with the fans or the readers?
P: I’d definitely like to mention that I have a social network called PlanetPit.com and they can go on there. I stay in touch with the fans there, it’s very educating, it’s very entertaining and it’s a lot of fun! Another thing is I also have my own foundation called “Imaginate” which is where we’re creating scholarships for not only underprivileged kids but 1st generation and 2nd generation etc. etc. immigrants ...they don’t have to be Latin but they just have to be people that are fightin’ for a career, for a goal, or fightin’ for a dream and we’re here to help the out with that. This year we’re gunna put a whole lot more money behind it.
TMF: Ok Pit, this is your chance to say anything you want to the readers, the fans, the haters…whoever! Go for it and leave us with some last words and shout-outs.
P: As far as the haters, we love them....we really appreciate you and y’all stay on your job. As far as the fans, I always thank them, I appreciate them and let them know that! To round up the whole interview, thank God, ‘cause without Him none of this is possible!
